Someone searching for a massage in Ordu often skips a question: what kind of place am I actually looking for? This guide is not written to praise one place. It is written to set out the questions worth asking when you choose. Some of the questions apply to any business in Ordu. Others become concrete with the written details of our location inside Radisson Blu Hotel Ordu, and we mark clearly where that happens. If you want a wider picture of how to recognise a good massage place in general, our guide on how to choose a massage spa covers nine questions.
Which three kinds of massage place are there in Ordu?
There are three basic options: a hotel spa, a standalone salon outside a hotel, and a hotel's own massage room.
Each can have its own advantages, and the choice depends on what you need.
A hotel spa is a spa inside a hotel building that can also include areas such as a hammam, sauna or pool next to the massage rooms. The Regulation on the Qualifications of Tourism Facilities defines a "spa" as a place with, in addition to a Turkish bath, at least four units such as a steam room, sauna, massage units and an indoor swimming pool, with separate changing, shower and toilet arrangements for women and men. That definition gives the general meaning of the word "spa"; it does not certify that a particular business meets it. Our location in Boztepe is inside the Radisson Blu Hotel Ordu, and Beatus Spa runs the hotel's spa.
A standalone salon can be a place with its own entrance and its own building that focuses on massage and similar care. It might be in the city centre, or it might focus on a single service. Such a place may also have advantages that a hotel spa does not offer; we are not criticising any of them and we are not making comparisons.
A hotel's own massage room may be a small service the hotel offers to its own guests, and how it works varies from hotel to hotel.
Three questions help you choose between these types. Do I only want a massage, or do I want to combine it with a hammam, sauna or pool? Does it need to be in the city centre, or is a district with a view such as Boztepe fine? Will I book by phone or WhatsApp? Your answers narrow the options, and the questions in the sections below fill in the detail.
A note on location: according to the Culture Portal page drawn from the Ordu Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Boztepe is 450 metres above sea level and 6 kilometres from the city centre, and can be reached by a paved road or by cable car. So choosing a spa in Boztepe means planning the journey in a way that a salon in the middle of town may not require. We do not judge that as good or bad; we only suggest you treat it as part of your day's plan.
What can you expect from a massage salon under the regulations, and which documents can you ask for?
Massage salons operate with a workplace opening and operating permit, and the regulation lists areas such as a waiting room, treatment rooms, a changing room and a rest room.
Every guest has the right to ask about documents.
Annex 1 of the Regulation on Workplace Opening and Operating Licences sets separate conditions for massage salons. They include a waiting room where guests are received, treatment rooms with a massage table, a changing room, a rest room for use after the massage, and a unit that takes care of cleaning the equipment. The same section also requires staff documents, the documents related to the workplace's operating permit and the price tariff approved by the chamber of tradesmen to be displayed visibly in the waiting room. All of this is explained step by step in our guide on how to choose a massage spa, so we do not repeat it here.
For the purpose of this article, three points are enough:
- You can ask for documents. In a salon covered by the regulation, it is normal for documents and the tariff to be displayed in a visible place. As a consumer, you have the right to ask. Turkey's Consumer Protection Law No. 6502 also requires tariffs and price lists for services to be displayed, and if the list price and the till price differ, the price in the customer's favour applies.
- A massage salon is not a health service. The same regulation states that massage techniques for medical treatment purposes cannot be applied in massage salons. So what you should expect from a massage place is rest and relaxation. If a salon tells you that a complaint will go away, treat that with caution; if you have a real health problem, the right door is a doctor. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) also advises against using massage to delay seeing a doctor about a medical problem.
- Which sections apply to whom depends on the type of permit. This is general consumer information. This article does not certify the permit of any business, our location included; you can ask the permit question just as comfortably anywhere.
NCCIH suggests asking about a massage practitioner's training, experience and credentials, and finding out the number of sessions and the cost in advance. ISPA also says to ask all your questions by calling the spa before your appointment, and that a spa will be happy to answer them. So asking is not rude; it is a recommended step.
What time does massage start, and when does it end?
At our Ordu location the spa opens at 12:30, massage sessions start at 13:00 and the last session is at 22:00. Do not expect a morning massage.
This is a point that can catch someone looking for a massage in Ordu out: our Boztepe location opens in the afternoon, and massage sessions are not held in the morning. Plan the day around this so you do not set out in the morning for nothing.
There is no single time for the last booking: it is given between 30 minutes and 1 hour before closing, depending on how far the guest is travelling. On the location page the opening hours appear as 12:30 to 23:00, while the last massage session reported by the location is at 22:00. Read the two together: although the doors may look open until 23:00, treat 22:00 as the limit for a massage. Hours on public holidays and special days can change, so confirming the exact time on WhatsApp for that day is the most reliable way.
If you are thinking of a massage after the hammam, sauna and steam room, the last-booking rule works in your favour: as a planning suggestion, you could put the massage at an earlier time to fit both services into the same evening; this is a suggestion, not a rule. We cover this plan in detail in our article on fitting a hammam, sauna and massage into the same evening in Ordu. For help deciding which in-hotel location to visit, the comparison guide is a good start.
Which massage type and how many minutes should you ask for?
Ask about the massage type and the length before you book. Ask the location's WhatsApp line which of the menu's types are done in Ordu.
The general Beatus massage menu is described on the site, but not every type is offered at every location. So ask in your message which massages and which lengths are done in Ordu. Our guide to types of massage and our massage page explain what the types are, and the page for our Ordu location gathers the location's own details; read them as background, and then ask in your message which ones are offered.
To describe the massage you want, three things are enough:
- Pressure: Light, medium or firm. You can change it during the session.
- Areas: The places you want to focus on, such as back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet or head. Say whether you want the whole body or only certain areas.
- Length: A short session or a longer one. Because lengths vary by type, get this from the location.
The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) describes what happens in a massage session: before the session starts, the massage practitioner asks a few questions, checks your pressure and comfort throughout, suggests that you decide whether there is music or conversation, and asks you to say so if you are uncomfortable at any point. If you are sensitive to an oil or lotion, say so before the session. These are generally accepted practices in the industry; for how a session runs at the Ordu location, ask when you book. You do not need to write your sensitivities or health conditions on WhatsApp; you can tell your massage specialist at the start of the session.
What should you ask if you want to combine a massage with the hammam, sauna and pool?
You can have a massage, the hammam, the sauna or the pool in the same visit; write which services you want together in your booking.
The order depends on your preference.
At our location in Boztepe, an indoor pool with a view of the Black Sea, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, a Turkish bath and a fitness centre are in the same spa. For combining a massage with these, three questions are enough: In what order am I planning to do things? How many minutes should I leave for each step? Does the last-booking time limit my plan? There is no single correct order: "hammam first, then massage" or the other way round is your choice. Make this choice by what feels comfortable for you, and ask the location.
For the pool, bring a swimsuit and a swim cap; a cap is required, and caps and swim shorts are sold at the location. The Ministry of Health's rules for swimming pools require users to enter the pool in swimwear and require arrangements where they can shower and disinfect their feet before entering, so come prepared to shower. For the sauna and steam room, the general precautions from Harvard Health Publishing apply: avoid alcohol, cool down slowly afterwards, drink plenty of water, do not use the sauna when you are ill, and leave straight away if you feel unwell. If you have a health condition, are sensitive to heat or are pregnant, speak to your doctor before a massage, the sauna, the steam room or the hammam.
ISPA suggests arriving about 30 minutes before the appointment so you can check in and start to unwind. If you are planning more than one service, this rule matters even more. If you also want to know how to order your time in the spa and a little of the hammam's history, see our guide to using a hotel spa in Ordu.
What should women guests look at?
When a woman guest books a scrub and foam, the hammam is reserved for women guests for that session. Apart from that, the hammam, sauna and steam room are shared.
To read the layout of the hammam in Ordu correctly, it helps to look first at what the words used to mean. The Turkey Tourism Encyclopaedia explains that single hammams were usually set aside for men or for women at set hours, while double hammams consisted of two sections built side by side. The single hammam at our Ordu location is not a hammam that opens to women or to men by timetable; it is an area that women and men use together, and there is no separate women's hammam. When a woman guest asks for a scrub and foam, the session is planned at the time of booking and the hammam is reserved for women guests for that time. Because this arrangement depends on the booking, say clearly in your message that you want a scrub and foam. For details, see our article on the hammam, scrub and foam booking and opening time in Ordu.
What is the arrangement in the massage rooms? According to AMTA's description of a massage session, the practitioner leaves the room at the start, you undress to your own level of comfort and lie under the sheet; only the area being worked on is uncovered. ISPA also explains that spas respect the guest's privacy and that the body is not uncovered beyond the area being worked on. These are general practices known in the industry. At the Ordu location, ask when you book how a session runs and what is provided (a peştemal is provided for the hammam), and ask about your preferences for the massage specialist. We cannot make a promise about the gender of the massage specialist: it varies from location to location, so ask the location about the situation in Ordu when you book.
Is there a couples' room if two of you are coming?
Yes, there is one couples' massage room at the Ordu location. Because there is only one, writing your preferred time in advance makes things easier.
A couples' room is a room where two people have a massage side by side. If you are coming with a partner, a friend or a relative, write "two people, couples' room" in your message. If you do not want to be in the same room, say so as well, and ask whether the session can be planned in two separate rooms. If the two of you will use areas such as the hammam or the sauna together, add that to your message too, because the hammam in Ordu is shared and a scrub and foam session is planned at the time of booking. If you are curious how a couples' massage goes, our couples' massage guide gives you an idea.
What if you are looking for a facial or skin care?
Facials and skin care are not done at the Ordu location, and there is no skin-care room.
Massage, scrub and foam, the hammam, the sauna, the steam room and the indoor pool are offered.
We say this plainly so that no one wastes their time. If you are looking for a facial, you can learn what it involves on our facials page and in our guide to facials at a spa, and see which locations offer it on the relevant location pages. In Ordu, plan a visit around massage and the hammam.
How do you get to Boztepe, and where do you park?
The location is on floor -1 of the hotel in Boztepe; you enter through the hotel entrance and go down by lift or stairs.
The hotel car park is open to spa guests at no charge, and there is no valet.
It is about a 4-minute walk from the Boztepe cable car station. According to the Culture Portal, Boztepe can be reached by the road route through Selimiye neighbourhood and the ring road connection, and you can also go up by cable car from Atatürk Park. Those coming by cable car walk from the station to the hotel. The time by car depends on where you set out from and the traffic, so check the current route; you can see the current route on Google Maps through the directions link on the location page.
The spa and the hammam are wheelchair accessible. Even so, if you write your access needs in your message before you come, the location can tell you the entrance route clearly. Car park and entrance terms depend on the hotel's own rules, so confirm them for the day you are coming.
Which language can you write in, and who replies on WhatsApp?
At the Ordu location the staff speak Turkish and English. There are no Arabic- or Russian-speaking staff, and WhatsApp messages in Arabic are not answered in Arabic.
You can write in English.
The location reports that the team at the hotel reception answers WhatsApp messages. That is a useful hint when you write: a message that is short, clear and complete gets a faster and more accurate reply. If you are an Arabic-speaking guest, write your message in English or in simple Turkish sentences; the date, time, service and number of people are enough.
Which eight questions should you ask before you book?
Make sure you have settled eight things: hours, massage type, the hammam arrangement, the plan for women guests, two people, facials, transport and language.
The table shows the location's information and what you need to ask.
| Topic | Location information | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | Spa 12:30, massage 13:00, last session 22:00 | The time for your day |
| Massage type | Menu is on the site; ask which types are done in Ordu | Type and length |
| Hammam | One, shared; scrub and foam offered | Scrub and foam time |
| Women guests | Hammam reserved for women during a scrub and foam | Mention it when booking |
| Two people | One couples' massage room | A suitable time |
| Facials | Not offered | Nothing to ask |
| Getting there | Floor -1; hotel car park | Which entrance |
| Language | Turkish and English | Write in English |
Writing the answers down once you have them agrees with ISPA's suggestion and reduces misunderstandings. You can use this table as the skeleton of your message.
What do you write in the booking message?
Put the day, time, service and number of people in one message.
You do not need to write any health information on WhatsApp; you can tell your massage specialist at the start of the session.
The phone and WhatsApp lines are on the contact card at the top of the page and on the spa page in Boztepe; we do not put the number in the article. Examples you can copy and edit:
English:
Hello, I would like to book a massage for two on Saturday evening around 6 pm. Is the couples' room available? We would also like to use the hammam before the massage; could you set a time for a scrub and foam? Which massage types and durations do you offer? We will come by car.
Turkish (if you prefer to write in Turkish):
Merhaba, cumartesi akşamı için iki kişi masaj randevusu almak istiyoruz. Çift odası uygun mu, 18.00 civarı bir saat var mı? Masajdan önce hamamı da kullanmak istiyoruz; kese-köpük için saat ayarlayabilir misiniz? Hangi masaj çeşitleri ve süreler uygulanıyor? Arabayla geleceğiz.
We do not publish prices on this site; you can ask the location for the current rate and a suitable time. For the wider picture of what changes a price, see our article on how massage and hammam prices are set. As ISPA suggests, ask about cancellation and rescheduling terms when you book. When the reply comes, confirm by writing the day, time and name of the service again.
