For most people who come to Sapanca for a weekend, the first plan is the lake shore. The second is to spend part of the day somewhere warm and quiet. Those who settle on the second plan usually get stuck on the same thing: "massage" is not one thing. There are several names side by side on the menu, and a duration beside each. Which you choose, how many minutes you set aside and where you put the hammam all shape how calm you feel on the day.
This article is meant to make that decision easier. We have covered the day plan in day-use hotel spa in Sapanca without staying, the hammam steps in the Sapanca hammam guide, and the road and the lake area in Istanbul to Sapanca weekend getaway, so we don't repeat them here. This article is only about the massage: which one, how long and in what order.
What does "spa massage" mean in Sapanca?
A spa massage is a massage given inside a spa building, as part of the same whole as the hammam, sauna and relaxation area. That has three practical consequences. First, the massage room is not a room on its own; it is one stop in a visit, and changing, showering, waiting and resting afterwards all happen under the same roof. Second, you don't have to step out onto the street the moment the session ends. Third, you don't have to go somewhere else to combine the massage with a hammam or a sauna.
The Beatus Spa location at Wellwood Sapanca is a typical example of this arrangement. The spa is in a separate building in the hotel garden, on the ground floor, and it welcomes guests who are not staying at the hotel. So a "spa massage" in this article means coming to the spa and using a massage room inside the spa building.
The distinction matters, because people who search in the same words may be looking for different things. Someone looking for a massage in Sapanca could mean in-room service at a hotel, an independent massage studio, or a spa inside a hotel. This article is about the last one: massage in the hotel's spa building. If you want a general checklist for telling a good massage place from a poor one, our guide how to choose a massage spa gives one.
Which massages are done at Wellwood Sapanca?
Four kinds of massage are offered at the location: aromatherapy, deep tissue, Thai and hot stone. Besides the massage rooms there is a couples' massage room. The table below gathers what each one generally means; what is actually done in a session varies with the pressure and the area your specialist agrees with you.
| Massage | What it generally means | Who it tends to suit | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aromatherapy | Massage using aromatic oils | Those who want light pressure and a scented experience | Ask the location for Sapanca durations |
| Deep tissue | Firm-pressure massage focused on areas of tension | Those who want to feel clear pressure | 55 minutes on the menu; confirm at the location |
| Thai | On a floor mat, with pressure and stretching movements | Those who want an active, stretching session | 55 and 80 minutes on the menu; confirm at the location |
| Hot stone | A session where heated stones accompany the massage strokes | Those who like warmth and a slow pace | Ask the location for Sapanca durations |
The duration column needs a plain note. The durations on our menu are menu-level; we do not guarantee here that every duration is offered at every location. Our menu page does not list a separate duration for aromatherapy and hot stone massage, so we have not written one for those two rows. Asking the location about duration is therefore a normal part of using the table. You can see the general menu on our massage page.
Two things to note as you read the table. First, for Thai massage the clothing is provided at the location, so you don't need to bring anything special. Second, the name "deep tissue" describes the focus of the pressure, not how hard it is. Strong pressure may not be right for every guest. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) writes that massage techniques are very varied, that the most common form in Western countries is Swedish or classic massage, and that traditions such as shiatsu and tuina come from Eastern cultures. The same source adds that risk appears to be low but that serious side effects have been reported on rare occasions, some of them with more intense types or in higher-risk people. So if you have a health condition, it is sensible to talk about pressure both with your doctor and with your massage specialist at the start of the session.
For the differences between the types in a broader frame, see our types of massage guide and what is Thai massage.
Which should you choose: four short scenarios
If you find it hard to decide, pick the sentence that describes your day:
- "I want something slow and quiet." Aromatherapy or hot stone. The difference is whether aromatic oil or heated stones are in the foreground; you set the pace with your massage specialist at the start of the session.
- "I want to feel clear pressure." Deep tissue. You adjust the pressure by speaking up during the session; saying "a little lighter" or "a little firmer" is entirely normal.
- "I want an active session." Thai. It is done on a floor mat and involves stretching; the clothing is provided at the location.
- "I don't know what I want." Write exactly that in your message. The location will list the options and a suitable duration with you. There is no need to feel shy about it.
How many minutes should you choose?
How long to choose depends on what else you will do that day, because a massage can be an appointment on its own or the middle of a hammam day. Four factors decide it.
The first factor is the rest of your day. If you will also have a hammam or sauna the same day, a long session lengthens the whole programme. Putting a shorter massage next to the hammam leaves room to breathe between the heat and the massage. For a massage-only appointment, it is easier to justify choosing a longer session.
The second factor is your experience. If it is your first spa massage, you may not know whether you will be comfortable through to the end of a long session. In that case you can start with a mid-length session and extend it on your second visit. That is not a rule, only a practical approach.
The third factor is the type of massage. The menu lists two durations for Thai massage (55 and 80 minutes) and 55 minutes for deep tissue. The general menu shows that a type is not tied to a single duration; the options vary by type. Asking the location which are offered that day is more reliable than trusting the table.
The fourth factor is your finishing time. Closing time is 22:00 and the last appointment is 21:30. If you choose a time close to the last appointment, leave time after the session for a shower, getting dressed and herbal tea. An appointment near the end of the evening can keep the whole day quiet for you, but if you have a fixed departure time (a drive, a dinner reservation), say so in your message.
A framework that helps when working out your own plan: the hammam rituals on the menu are 40 (Pasha Hammam), 55 (Scheherazade Hammam) and 80 minutes (Sultan Hammam). Assuming a 55-minute massage, a hammam and massage together come to 95 to 135 minutes. Add changing, showering, a break in between and leaving, and the visit easily approaches three hours. This is a planning suggestion; the durations the location offers that day may differ. The details of the hammam rituals are on our Turkish bath page.
Hammam first or massage first?
If you are doing both on the same day, the logical order is often hammam first, then massage. But this is not a rule; it is a common preference in spa practice and does not rest on a source. The reasoning is practical. A person coming out of the hammam is already warm, rinsed and slowed down, and entering the massage room in that state does not start the session unprepared. The reverse is possible too; if you want to go into the hammam after the massage, ask the location whether that will affect the order of the hammam ritual. Find out in your message which order the location recommends.
As a practical rule we can suggest this: leave at least one break between the two sessions. Because no source gives an exact break length, we don't give a number; make the break long enough to have tea and water and not feel rushed. Know your own limit with heat: Harvard Health Publishing recommends staying in a sauna for 15 to 20 minutes at most, avoiding alcohol before and after, and drinking water at the end of each session. The same source also reminds people with health problems to consult their doctors before using a sauna.
At the Sapanca location the hammam is separate for women and for men. That means two people arriving together will be in separate sections during the hammam, while the massages can be booked for the same time or for consecutive times. If you want the sessions at the same time, say so from the start; the location will reply in the message whether that is possible.
Two people, the VIP room and the couples' massage room
For plans for two in Sapanca there are two separate options, and they are different things.
The couples' massage room. The location has one couples' massage room. With only one room, your options can narrow if another couple has booked the same time, so it makes sense to write early for a weekend. Couples' massage programmes appear on the general menu under names such as the Beatus Couples Massage (55 minutes); ask the location which is offered at Sapanca. For a fuller description, see our couples massage guide.
The VIP room. Inside the room are a shower, WC, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and hammam together, and it is set aside for two people or for a family of five. It is an option for couples, families and small groups who want to build a warm setting of their own without entering the shared areas. We don't have exact information on whether the VIP room includes a massage, how long it is for or how it is used with a given number of people, so we suggest you ask when you book. The difference in what a VIP room means across locations is explained in what is a VIP spa room.
If you are bringing children, we can't give information here on an age condition; write the child's age in your message and wait for the location's answer. How a massage can be arranged within a family of five is likewise something to ask the location.
Weekend or weekday? How to choose a time
The location opens at 10:00 and closes at 22:00; the last appointment is 21:30. Which time you choose within those hours depends on two things: whether you are planning a hammam day or only a massage, and your other plans, such as the lake shore.
Three typical patterns come to mind:
- An afternoon session. Coming to the spa in the afternoon after a walk by the lake makes the day flow naturally. If you do the hammam and massage back to back, you can go to dinner calm and hungry.
- An evening session. If you have other things to do during the day, you can leave it to the evening. Because the last appointment is 21:30, start earlier if you are combining the hammam and the massage: don't wait for 21:30 to fit two sessions in.
- A late-morning session. The location opens at 10:00, so starting the day with a massage is also an option; you can then leave the hammam and the lake walk for later.
Writing early for the weekend is a general precaution: there is one couples' room, and several requests for the same time can arrive at once. Only the location can give exact availability, so giving a flexible range in your message ("anytime between 14:00 and 17:00 works") usually brings a quick and sufficient reply.
Summer and winter: the outdoor pool and the massage
The outdoor pool at the Sapanca location is used from June to the end of September. The pool is not part of the massage, but it is part of a summer day: if you will swim and then go to your massage, leave time to dry your hair and body. For pool rules, see our hotel pool etiquette guide. A swim cap is not required, and a peştemal and towel are provided at the spa.
After the end of September the outdoor pool is not used. We do not share information on whether the location has an indoor pool, so if the pool is decisive for you, ask directly. In autumn and winter the spa day is built around the massage, the hammam and the sauna. For a winter plan, see Sapanca in winter.
For the massage itself the seasonal difference is small, because the session takes place inside the spa building. The real difference between summer and winter is what you are wearing when you arrive and how cold you will feel when you go outside afterwards. In winter, staying a few minutes inside the spa rather than stepping straight out is one more reason for herbal tea; in summer, a bottle of water is enough to bring.
How to speak up during the session
Your massage specialist works by listening to you; you don't have to talk, and you don't need to hold back from speaking either. The International SPA Association (ISPA) writes that you are under no obligation to talk during a session, that it is right to say so if the touch feels too firm or too light, and that you can also mention it if the room temperature or the music bothers you. The same document recommends telling your massage specialist about any particular injury or physical condition, and notes that the specialist uncovers only the area being worked on.
Three sentences that work in practice:
- "A little lighter on the pressure, please."
- "Could you spend a bit more time on this area?"
- "The room is a little warm (or cold)."
You don't need to share health information in a WhatsApp message. Telling your massage specialist at the start of the session, when you arrive, is enough. If you are pregnant, sensitive to heat or have a health condition, it is best to speak to your doctor before the appointment. Nothing in this article replaces medical advice.
We can't make a general promise about the gender of the specialist: this preference differs from one location to another. If it matters to you, put it in your message and get the location's answer.
How is the price decided?
We don't publish prices on our website; current information comes from the location by phone or WhatsApp. For the general picture of what affects price, you can read how massage and hammam prices are set. We would only add this: when you compare services, look not only at the name and the duration but at the scope. Two massages with the same name may be offered with different durations, and with a different use of the hammam or relaxation area. Writing "current information for this duration and this type" in your message is the shortest way to a fair comparison.
Booking: what to write on WhatsApp
Bookings are made by phone or WhatsApp; there is no online booking system. According to the location, WhatsApp messages are answered by reception in about three minutes. At busy times this can take longer. The numbers are on the call card on this page and on the Wellwood Sapanca location page; tap the phone or WhatsApp button there.
A good message has five pieces of information: the date, the time range, the number of people, the service you want, and whether you are staying at the hotel. You can copy the examples below and fill in the square brackets.
For one person
Hello, I'd like to come to the Sapanca location on [date] between [time range] as 1 person. I'm not staying at the hotel. Is there a slot for a [deep tissue / Thai / aromatherapy / hot stone] massage? Which durations are offered? I'd also like to have a hammam with this massage; what order would you suggest?
For two people
Hello, we'd like to come on [date] between [time range] as 2 people. We're thinking of a massage in the couples' massage room and a hammam afterwards. We're not staying at the hotel. Do you have a free time? Since the hammam is separate for women and men, how should we plan the order?
For the VIP room and a family
Hello, we'd like to come as a family of [number of people] for the VIP room on [date]. The children are [ages]. Could we add a massage? What times are available, and how do you suggest we arrange it?
If you haven't decided yet
Hello, we'd like to come to the Sapanca location on [date]. We can't decide between a massage and a hammam. There are [number of people] of us and we're free between [time range]. What options and durations are there?
English-speaking staff are available at the location, and a translation app is used for other languages. An example message: "Hello, we would like a massage and a hammam session for two on [date], between [time] and [time]. We are not staying at the hotel. What is available?"
After you send the message, make sure the location's reply gives the date, time, type and duration separately. If the reply is unclear, ask for confirmation in one sentence: "So you are confirming [date] [time], [type], [duration], is that right?" That way there are no surprises on the day.
Arriving about 15 to 30 minutes before the appointment leaves time for changing and a short conversation. ISPA also recommends arriving about 30 minutes before a session. There is a car park at the location and there is no valet service. A bathrobe, slippers, towel and single-use underwear are provided; bring a swimsuit and comfortable clothes if you like.
