Someone searching for a massage or a spa in Bağcılar is usually stuck on the same question: there are two addresses in the district, so which one do I write to? This guide compares the two locations with the same criteria and the same number of sentences each. It does not rank one above the other. The aim is to help you see which layout fits what you need. Each location also has its own detailed guide: for Mahmutbey, our hours and booking guide; for Güneşli, our one-hammam-per-booking guide. Phone and WhatsApp lines are on the contact card at the top of the page. You will find our other Istanbul locations on the Istanbul spa page.
If you are new to the area: Bağcılar is a district on the European side of Istanbul, west of the centre. Mahmutbey and Güneşli are neighbourhoods inside it, and local people use those names more than "Bağcılar" itself.
What does a hotel spa mean in Bağcılar, and do you need to stay at the hotel?
A hotel spa is a spa that operates inside a hotel building.
At both of our locations you come by appointment and you do not have to stay at the hotel. You are looking for a spa inside a hotel, not a standalone shop.
In practice that has three consequences. First, you enter through the hotel: through the main hotel lobby in Mahmutbey, and through the car park and the lobby in Güneşli. Second, services run by appointment. Instead of walking in and waiting your turn, you write the day and time in advance. Third, a spa is not a single service. Alongside massage, areas such as the hammam, sauna, steam room and pool are part of the same building.
Turkish regulation points the same way. The Regulation on the Qualifications of Tourism Facilities defines a spa as a place that has, in addition to a Turkish bath, at least four units such as a steam room, sauna, massage units and an indoor swimming pool, with separate changing, locker, shower and toilet arrangements for women and men. That tells you what the word "spa" means in general; it does not certify that any particular location meets the definition. What matters here is that the definition treats the layout of the wet areas (who changes where, who washes where) as one of the basic questions about a spa. Our two Bağcılar locations answer that question in different ways.
Where are Mahmutbey and Güneşli in Bağcılar, and how do you get there?
The Mahmutbey location is in Mahmutbey neighbourhood and the Güneşli location is in Bağlar neighbourhood, on Mimar Sinan Street. Both are inside the Bağcılar district boundary.
Our hotel spa in Mahmutbey is at Mahmutbey Mahallesi, 2664. Sokak No:12/A, on the ground floor of the Wanda Vista Istanbul hotel. Our location in Güneşli is at Bağlar Mahallesi, Mimar Sinan Caddesi No:35, inside The G Hotels Istanbul. Güneşli is a neighbourhood name. On the address, the district is written as Bağcılar, but most people who live in the area call this part Güneşli. That is why "Bağcılar", "Güneşli" and "Mahmutbey" can all come up when you search. To decide by district, hours and route, see the Istanbul location comparison.
On transport, the two locations differ. You can reach the Güneşli location from Mimar Sinan station on Istanbul's M9 metro line in about 3 minutes, a walk of 230 metres. Metro İstanbul's M9 line page lists Mimar Sinan among the stations on the line. To reach the Mahmutbey location by public transport, use the directions link on the location page; Google Maps shows a current route from wherever you are. If you are coming by car, both locations have a car park, covered in a later section.
Wet-area layout: separate areas, or a hammam closed for each booking?
In Mahmutbey, women and men have separate saunas, steam rooms and hammams; the pool is shared.
In Güneşli, a single hammam is closed for each booking, with only the guests and the massage specialist inside.
This is the clearest difference between the two, and it touches an old question in hammam culture: who do you share a hammam with? The Turkey Tourism Encyclopaedia, describing single and double hammams, writes that single hammams were usually set aside for men or for women at set hours, while double hammams consisted of two sections built side by side. In the traditional arrangement, the answer was either a time slot or a section. The Mahmutbey location works on a logic close to the two-section idea: women and men each have their own wet areas, so a separate women's day or hour is not needed. Güneşli answers differently: the space is set aside for a booking.
A word of caution about terms. The "single hammam" in Güneşli is not the same as the historic "single hammam" in the encyclopaedia. A historic single hammam opened to men or to women according to a timetable. In Güneşli, the hammam is held for one booking while it lasts; it does not mean a time slot for women or for men. If you want a hammam that is separate for women, the layout at our hotel spa in Mahmutbey is closer to that idea. If you want a hammam that is closed for your booking, the layout at the hammam in Güneşli is closer to that. Both are a choice, not a ranking.
If you want to know how the hammam ritual itself works, you will find it on our Turkish bath page. The two layouts at a glance:
| Topic | Mahmutbey | Güneşli |
|---|---|---|
| Hammam | Separate for women and men | One hammam, closed for each booking |
| Sauna and steam | Separate for women and men | Dry sauna and steam room |
| Pool | Indoor and outdoor (15 Jun to 15 Sep), shared | Indoor pool |
| Massage | Starts at 12:30 | Ask the location for the start time |
| Couples' room | One room, plus a VIP room with a jacuzzi | One room |
| Languages | Turkish, English, Chinese; Arabic | English, Persian |
| Car park | Open-air car park | Car park |
For Güneşli, ask for the massage start time in your booking message.
What time does the spa open, and when does massage start?
In Mahmutbey, the spa and gym open at 08:00 and massage starts at 12:30.
In Güneşli, the spa is open 08:00 to 22:00, and you should write to the location for the massage start time. At both, the last booking is at 21:00.
For Mahmutbey (massage types and durations are on the massage menu): the spa and gym are open every day from 08:00 to 22:00, massage starts at 12:30 and runs until 22:00, and bookings are taken until 21:00. So someone who arrives in the morning can use the sauna, steam room, hammam, pool and gym, but cannot have a massage yet. A guest who expects a morning massage and does not know this could make the trip for nothing. If you are planning a ritual such as the scrub and foam, ask for the time in your booking message.
For Güneşli, the spa is open every day from 08:00 to 22:00 and the last booking is at 21:00. When massage starts and at which hours the hammam rituals run are not among the details we have been given. So if you are thinking of a morning massage in Güneşli, get the answer from the location, and do not assume that massage is also available from 08:00.
The International SPA Association (ISPA) gives people heading to a spa two practical tips: call the spa before your appointment and ask all your questions, and arrive about 30 minutes before the appointment so you can check in and start to unwind. The same guide also suggests asking about cancellation terms when you book. Cancellation and rescheduling terms can vary by location, so ask when you book.
How do the pool, sauna and steam room work at the two locations?
Mahmutbey has an indoor pool, plus an outdoor pool from 15 June to 15 September. Güneşli has an indoor pool. A swim cap is required in the pool at both.
In Mahmutbey, a swimsuit and a swim cap are required in the pool. The cap is sold at the spa; you bring your own swimsuit. The peştemal (the thin cotton wrap used in hammams) and a towel are provided by the location. Because the outdoor pool is seasonal, note the dates if you are planning a summer visit: 15 June to 15 September. Outside those dates, pool use is limited to the indoor pool.
In Güneşli, a swim cap is also required in the pool, and the towel, slippers and peştemal are provided. Ask whether caps are sold at the location; the easiest option is to bring your own cap and swimsuit. Güneşli has an indoor pool; if you are looking for an outdoor pool, ask in your booking message.
Pool rules are not only a decision of the location. The Ministry of Health's rules for swimming pools set out certain steps whoever runs the pool. The Regulation on Health Principles for Swimming Pools requires that users enter the pool in swimwear, that there are arrangements where users can shower and disinfect their feet before entering, and that showers, toilets and changing areas are laid out separately for women and men. The Ministry of Health's General Directorate of Public Health "Pool Waters" page also stresses that showering and foot disinfection apply to everyone. So come prepared to shower before you get in. The swim cap requirement is not a rule written into that regulation; it is a rule set by the operator, and it applies at both locations.
Regulation also sets some basics for saunas. The Regulation on Workplace Opening and Operating Licences requires warning signs for people who should not enter a sauna for health and hygiene reasons, thermometers showing the inside temperature, and, in hammams, that the towel sets used by guests are washed and disinfected after each use. This is general consumer information and does not certify any particular location.
For the sauna and steam room, practical advice matches the general precautions on Harvard Health Publishing's sauna page: avoid alcohol before and after, cool down slowly afterwards, drink plenty of water, do not use the sauna when you are ill, and leave straight away if you feel unwell. These precautions apply at both locations. If you have a health condition, are sensitive to heat or are pregnant, speak to your doctor before the sauna, steam room or hammam.
What should you ask if you are coming as a couple, or with a friend?
Both locations have one couples' massage room, and Mahmutbey also has a VIP room with a jacuzzi. In Güneşli, ask the location whether two people can use the hammam together.
A couples' room is a room where two people have a massage side by side. If the two of you do not need to be in the same room, two separate rooms can be an option as well. When you write, say whether you want "a couples' room" or "two separate rooms"; they are different plans. We cover how a couples' massage goes in our couples' massage guide, and what a VIP room is in our VIP spa room article.
The VIP room in Mahmutbey has a jacuzzi, and the jacuzzi is only in that room, nowhere else in the spa. Ask in your booking message what the room includes and how many people it takes. Details of the room can vary, and a fixed description from us could mislead you.
In Güneşli the hammam is closed for each booking, so the key question for two people is this: can both of us be written into the same hammam booking? Get that answer from the location, not from us; writing "two people, hammam together" in your message is enough. If you are coming as a group of friends, remember that each person may need a separate booking.
What about the gym and membership?
In Mahmutbey there are three personal trainers, and day passes and 3, 6 and 12-month memberships are offered.
In Güneşli, Beatus runs the BOOST gym, and memberships are open to people from outside the hotel.
In Mahmutbey, membership covers the gym, the indoor pool, the outdoor pool in season, the sauna, steam room and hammam; towel and peştemal are provided. There are no standard group classes; you can take a personal programme or a single session. There is no women-only section or time slot in the gym.
In Güneşli, the gym is open every day from 08:00 to 22:00, with equipment for cardio, strength and flexibility work and a personal trainer. Memberships are open to people from outside the hotel, and a membership covers the sauna, steam room, hammam and indoor pool. Ask the location which membership lengths are available. Here too, there is no time slot reserved for women.
If you are thinking of the gym and the spa together, you will find in our guide to gyms with a pool in Bağcılar how to move to the wet areas after a workout, sample weekly plans and what to ask a personal trainer. We have kept the gym side short here on purpose.
How do you get there by car or by metro?
Both locations have a car park, reported as open to spa guests at no charge; confirm this before you come.
In Mahmutbey, the car park is open-air and there is no valet service. The spa is on the ground floor and you enter through the main hotel lobby; the spa and gym are wheelchair accessible. In Güneşli, you enter through the car park and the lobby, and the spa is wheelchair accessible. For valet service in Güneşli, ask the location.
If you are coming by metro, for Güneşli we have a clear answer: about 3 minutes' walk from Mimar Sinan station. Metro İstanbul's M9 line page lists the station among the stops on the line. For Mahmutbey, the only information is the directions link on the location page; choose public transport on the map to see a route.
Which language can you write in, and how quickly do they reply on WhatsApp?
At the Mahmutbey location the staff speak Turkish, English and Chinese, and WhatsApp messages in Arabic are answered in Arabic. At the Güneşli location the staff speak English and Persian.
If you are a foreign guest, a hotel visitor or someone who speaks Turkish as a second language, this difference may matter to you. If you would like to write in Arabic, you can use the WhatsApp line of the Mahmutbey location. For Güneşli, write in English, or ask the location first whether Arabic messages are answered in Arabic.
On reply times, the locations report that WhatsApp messages are usually answered within a few minutes, and that this can take longer at busy hours. In Mahmutbey the location's own team replies; in Güneşli the spa reception does. For an important plan, do not leave it to the next day: write the date and time as early as you can.
Which location suits which plan? Four short scenarios
If you want separate wet areas for women and men, look at Mahmutbey. If you want a hammam that is closed for your booking, look at Güneşli.
If you are coming by metro, look at Güneşli; for a summer pool, look at Mahmutbey.
These are matches to needs, not rankings. You use the same booking channel for both, and you can write the same question to both locations and put the answers side by side.
- You want the sauna, steam room and hammam in separate areas: Separate wet areas for women and men are in Mahmutbey; the pool is shared. If an outdoor pool in summer is part of your plan, note the dates: 15 June to 15 September.
- You want a hammam held for one booking: In Güneşli the hammam is closed for each booking, and only the guests and the massage specialist are inside. We make no wider promise of privacy; we only describe the arrangement the location has reported. Write clearly in your message who will be in the booking.
- You want time alone as a pair in a VIP room with a jacuzzi: The jacuzzi is in the VIP room in Mahmutbey. Ask on WhatsApp about the room, the length and the time slot.
- You are coming by public transport: The Güneşli location is about a 3-minute walk from Mimar Sinan metro station. For Mahmutbey, check the route on the map.
None of these scenarios rules out the other location: both have a hammam, a sauna and a couples' massage option. The list only shows the differences that stand out.
What do you write to WhatsApp to book?
Put the day, time, service and number of people in one message.
You do not need to write any health information on WhatsApp; you can tell your massage specialist at the start of the session.
We do not give numbers in the article. The Mahmutbey and Güneşli lines are on the contact card at the top of the page, and on the Mahmutbey location page and the Güneşli location page. When you prepare the message, think about five things: which day and time, which service, how many people, whether you need a couples' room or a VIP room, and whether you are coming by car. Two examples you can copy and edit:
For Mahmutbey:
Hello, we are planning a spa day for two people on Saturday afternoon. Is the couples' room available for a massage, and is there a slot around 13:30? After the massage we would like to use the hammam areas; could you suggest a time? We are coming by car.
For Güneşli:
Hello, I would like to book a hammam on Thursday evening. There are two of us; can we be booked into the same appointment together? We are also thinking of a massage after the hammam. What time does massage start, and which durations do you have? We will come by metro.
We do not publish prices on this site; you can ask the location for the current rate and a suitable time. Turkey's Consumer Protection Law No. 6502 requires that tariffs and price lists for services be displayed, and that if the list price and the till price differ, the price in the customer's favour applies. For the wider picture of what changes a price, see our article on how massage and hammam prices are set. As ISPA suggests, ask about cancellation and rescheduling terms when you book.
When the reply comes, confirm by repeating the day, time and the name of the service. A short message means fewer misunderstandings.
