What does "women-only hammam" mean, and which locations have one?
A women-only hammam is a hammam, or a section made up of a hammam, sauna and steam room, that is set aside for women guests. In Istanbul that arrangement exists at our Osmanbey, Harbiye, Mahmutbey and Esenyurt locations.
The phrase "set aside for women" reports a fact about which area is kept for which guests, and it is worth separating two things. The first is the wet areas: the hammam, the sauna and the steam room. The second is the massage rooms. At Osmanbey, Harbiye and Mahmutbey, what our location information describes as set aside for women is the wet areas. At Esenyurt the women's section also includes a massage room and a rest area. So someone searching for a "women-only hammam" may mean slightly different things depending on the location, and knowing that before you write makes it easier to ask the right question by WhatsApp or phone.
Two questions sit behind the search, and this guide answers both. First, is the hammam itself separate? Second, does the separation apply all day, or only at certain hours? At Esenyurt the section is for women whenever the location is open. At Mahmutbey the wet areas were built separately from the start, so there is no women's day or men's day. Osmanbey has no separate women's hours either; instead it has a sauna, steam room and hammam for women.
This guide does not cover the multi-floor arrangement in Trabzon. You can read about that concept, with the Black Sea example, in our guide to the women-only hammam and massage floor. Here we look only at Istanbul and its districts.
How were women's and men's hammam areas divided historically, and do today's layouts resemble that?
In historic hammams there were two ways to divide the space. Either one hammam was given to women at some hours and to men at others, or two sections were built side by side. Today's layouts can be compared to both.
The Türkiye Tourism Encyclopaedia classes hammams as single and double. Single hammams were generally set aside for men or women at fixed hours. Double hammams consisted of two sections built next to each other, and according to the encyclopaedia the men's section was usually larger than the women's. The Beyazıd II Hammam in Istanbul is a well-known example. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Türkiye Museums page, it is an adjoining double hammam designed as separate buildings for men and women, the women's part is somewhat smaller, and the two entrances face different streets. Today it can be visited as the Turkish Hammam Culture Museum.
There are also records of the hammam as a social meeting place for women. The Go Türkiye tourism portal describes women's hammams as shared spaces where brides were bathed before their weddings, where mothers marked the 40th day after a birth, and where women gathered weekly to chat. This is history and culture. It does not describe how our locations work.
Two simple comparisons help with today's layouts. The separate women's and men's hammams at Harbiye and Mahmutbey resemble the double-hammam idea: two sections are built apart, so no sharing of hours is needed. The hammam at Güneşli resembles the single-hammam idea, except that instead of sharing hours it is closed off for each booking. These comparisons are only to help you picture the layouts. What applies at each location is set out district by district below. The TDV Islamic Encyclopaedia also has a long entry on hammams, if you want the wider background.
What is set aside for women at each Istanbul location, at a glance?
Four locations set aside an area for women, but what is set aside differs: a hammam, a sauna and steam room, or a massage room. The table is compiled from our location pages. For current details, ask the location.
| Location (district) | Set aside for women | Hours | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osmanbey (Şişli) | Sauna, steam room and hammam | 08:00 - 22:00, last appointment 21:30 | Hammams are open only to guests with a treatment; the pool is on the roof |
| Harbiye (Şişli) | Separate hammams for women and men | 10:00 - 22:00, last appointment 21:00 | A couples' hammam and single-person hammams as well; no pool |
| Mahmutbey (Bağcılar) | Separate sauna, steam room and hammam for women and men | Spa 08:00 - 22:00, massage from 12:30 | The pool is shared |
| Esenyurt - Beylikdüzü | Hammam, sauna, steam room, massage room and rest area | 10:00 - 22:00 | The section belongs to women whenever it is open; no pool |
| Güneşli (Bağcılar) | No women's section; the single hammam is closed off for each booking | 08:00 - 22:00, last booking 21:00 | Indoor pool |
| Maltepe | No hammam; sauna and steam room | 10:00 - 22:00 | The only location on the Asian side |
The first thing the table shows is that "set aside for women" means four different things at four locations. At Osmanbey it is the sauna, steam room and hammam. At Harbiye it is the hammam itself. At Mahmutbey it is all three wet areas. At Esenyurt it is a section that includes a massage room. The headings below take each in turn.
How does the women-only sauna, steam room and hammam work at Osmanbey and Şişli?
The Osmanbey location has a sauna, steam room and hammam set aside for women, and there are no separate women's hours. The hammams are open only to guests with a treatment, during their treatment.
The location is inside the Ramada Plaza İstanbul City Center on Halaskargazi Street, about four minutes (300 m) on foot from Osmanbey metro on the M2 line; the nearest exits are Pangaltı and Dolapdere. According to Metro İstanbul's line page, the M2 line runs through Taksim, Osmanbey and Şişli-Mecidiyeköy in turn, so guests coming from Taksim or Mecidiyeköy can reach it on one line. The spa is on floor 7, you enter through the hotel lobby, and there is no wheelchair access.
To use the hammam here you need a treatment booking. In other words, you cannot plan the hammam as a stand-alone day visit. In practice it is enough to write the order you want when you book, such as "hammam first, then massage" or the other way round. If you want more detail on order and timing, our guide to planning a hammam and a massage on the same day covers it.
There are seven massage rooms and one couples' massage room. The spa opens every day at 08:00 and closes at 22:00, and the last appointment is 21:30. The pool is on the roof, and the roof opens and closes with the season, so if you also want to swim, ask the location about pool hours separately. We have no location in Nişantaşı. The closest option for guests coming from Nişantaşı is the Osmanbey location, and for the travel time it is enough to check Google Maps from where you are.
If you are undecided between Osmanbey and Harbiye, we have a separate guide that sets the two side by side. This one looks only at the area set aside for women.
How are the women's hammam and the couples' hammam arranged around Harbiye and Taksim?
The Harbiye location has separate hammams for women and men, plus a couples' hammam and single-person hammams. Women guests use their own hammam.
The location is on floor -1 of the Radisson Hotel İstanbul Harbiye, about a 10-minute walk from Taksim metro (M2) and about 11 minutes from Taksim Square; the address is Cumhuriyet Street No:46. The spa is reached by stairs only, and there is no lift. It helps to know that before you go, especially if you arrive tired from walking. You enter through the hotel lobby, the car park is open to spa guests and there is a valet service.
The area set aside for women here is the hammam. The sauna and steam room are on the same floor, but our location information does not say that they are divided into separate women's and men's sections, so we suggest asking when you book how the sauna and steam room are used. There is no pool at Harbiye. If you want a location with a pool, there is the rooftop pool at Osmanbey, or the options at Mahmutbey and Güneşli.
Another feature of the location is a VIP room for two, with a sauna, hammam, jacuzzi and massage inside the room. This is not a section set aside for women. It is a room that two people use together. If a mother and daughter, two friends or a couple want to compare the options, our couples' hammam guide and our article on what a VIP spa room is will help.
The spa is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, and the last appointment is 21:00. For guests who would like to write in Arabic: at Harbiye, WhatsApp messages in Arabic are answered in Arabic. For the massage and hammam rituals at this location, see our Turkish bath page and the Harbiye guide.
How do the separate women's hammam and the shared pool work together at Mahmutbey and Bağcılar?
At Mahmutbey, the sauna, steam room and hammam are in separate sections for women and men, and the pool is shared. A swimsuit and a swimming cap are required for the pool, so bring them if you plan to swim.
The location is on the ground floor of the Wanda Vista İstanbul hotel in the Mahmutbey district of Bağcılar. You enter through the main hotel lobby, spa guests use the open car park, and there is no valet service. The spa and fitness area can be used with a wheelchair. The layout here is the modern counterpart of the historic double hammam: because the wet areas were built separately from the start, there is no women's day or men's day, and both sections are in use for as long as the spa is open.
The pool, on the other hand, is a shared area for both women and men. The indoor pool is used all year, and the outdoor pool is open from 15 June to 15 September. A swimsuit and a swimming cap are compulsory; guests bring their own swimsuit and caps are sold at the spa. There is no swimming pool set aside for women or for men. Knowing this in advance lets you plan for having your own hammam section but a mixed environment at the pool.
The hours work a little differently. The spa and fitness area open at 08:00 every day and close at 22:00, while massage starts in the afternoon at 12:30 and runs until 22:00. Bookings are taken until 21:00. So if you are thinking of a hammam and sauna in the morning and a massage in the afternoon, build your plan around those times. We do not give a fixed walking or driving time for Mahmutbey; for a current route the Directions link on the location page is enough. WhatsApp messages in Arabic are answered in Arabic here too.
If you would like to compare the two Bağcılar locations, our guide on two hotel spas in Bağcılar looks at Mahmutbey and Güneşli from a separate angle.
At Esenyurt and Beylikdüzü, is the women's section for women all day?
Yes. At the Esenyurt location the women's section consists of a hammam, sauna, steam room, massage room and rest area, and it is set aside for women guests for every hour the location is open.
Of the four Istanbul locations, this is the only arrangement in which the section includes the massage room. The separation is not tied to particular hours: for as long as the spa is open, the section belongs to women. Moving from the hammam to a massage or to the rest area happens inside the same section, which makes it easier to combine a hammam and a massage in one visit. The hammam and sauna can be used for the day without having a massage, and there is no membership.
The location is on floor -1 of the Euro Park Otel in the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa district of Esenyurt, and guests also come from Beylikdüzü. The nearest metrobus stop is Cumhuriyet. You can enter from the car park or from the hotel entrance, spa guests can use the car park, and there is a valet service. There is no pool, jacuzzi or VIP room. There are two couples' massage rooms, one in one section and the other in the section set aside for women. If you would like to know how the other section is arranged, you can ask the location.
The location is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00. The last appointment is between 20:30 and 21:00 depending on the treatment, and guests arriving up to 21:30 are also accepted. If you are coming with friends or family, groups of 10 to 15 people are welcome; up to 20 is possible, but the space is tighter, so it is a good idea to write the date and time in advance. For more on the evening hours, see our article on the women's section and evening hours at Esenyurt.
What if there is no women's section at Güneşli or Maltepe?
The Güneşli location has a single hammam, which is closed off for each booking, and the Maltepe location has no hammam. Neither offers a women's section, but they answer different needs.
The Güneşli location is inside The G Hotels İstanbul, 3 minutes (230 m) on foot from Mimar Sinan metro on the M9 line. According to Metro İstanbul's line page, Mimar Sinan is one of the stops on the M9 Ataköy-Olimpiyat line. The hammam works like this: it is closed off for each booking, and only the guest and the massage specialist are inside. Because it is not a hammam shared with other guests, everyone, women and men alike, is served under the same arrangement. This is not a VIP room; it is how the hammam works at this location. Whether two people can enter the hammam together on one booking is something to ask the location in advance. The location is open every day from 08:00 to 22:00, and the last booking is 21:00.
For a woman guest, this arrangement may be a separate option if she wants a closed hammam on her own or with a friend, but it is not the same as a "women-only section". It is worth keeping the two apart. If you are looking for a separate women's section within the hammam, Mahmutbey or Esenyurt is the more straightforward route.
The Maltepe location is on the Asian side, in Altayçeşme, about 8 minutes on foot from Maltepe metro (M4). It offers massage, skin care, a sauna, a steam room and a couples' massage room, but no hammam. If you want a hammam, the locations above come into play; if massage and sauna are enough, the Maltepe location is our closest address for people living on the Asian side. It is open every day, including public holidays.
Which district should you ask about, depending on what you need?
If you want the hammam itself set aside for women, ask at Harbiye, Mahmutbey or Esenyurt. If you also want the massage room to be in a separate women's section, write to Esenyurt.
Each location offers its own arrangement. The situations below are drawn only from our location information and should be read as "if you need this, look at that location".
If you want the hammam itself set aside for women: At Harbiye, Mahmutbey and Esenyurt the hammam is set aside for women or built as a separate section. Osmanbey has a women-only hammam too, but it is used together with a treatment booking.
If you want the massage room to be in the women's section too: This arrangement is described for the Esenyurt location. At the other locations, ask when you book how the massage rooms are arranged.
If you plan an early hammam and sauna: Osmanbey and Mahmutbey open at 08:00; Harbiye and Esenyurt at 10:00. Remember that massage at Mahmutbey starts at 12:30.
If you want a pool as well: Osmanbey has a rooftop pool, Mahmutbey has an indoor and an outdoor pool, and Güneşli has an indoor pool. Harbiye and Esenyurt have no pool. Remember that the pool at Mahmutbey is shared.
If you are coming with your mother, daughter or a group of friends: The Esenyurt location welcomes groups of 10 to 15. At other locations, ask about group arrangements.
If you are coming by metro: Osmanbey (M2), Harbiye (Taksim, M2), Güneşli (M9) and Maltepe (M4) are within walking distance of a metro station; for Esenyurt the metrobus stop is Cumhuriyet. For Mahmutbey, the route from the map is enough.
If stairs are a problem: At Harbiye the spa is reached by stairs only. Mahmutbey and Güneşli have wheelchair access; Osmanbey does not. For Esenyurt and Maltepe the access information is not yet confirmed, so if you need it, speak to the location before your visit.
None of the items on this list makes one location better than another; different needs bring different locations to the front. For a general way of choosing a location, see our article on how to choose a spa location in Istanbul.
How do you plan a hammam and a massage on the same day, and how do you book?
You book through each location's own WhatsApp or phone line; there is no online booking engine. Your message only needs the location, date, time, number of people and the service you would like.
Each location's phone and WhatsApp numbers are on its page: Osmanbey, Harbiye, Mahmutbey, Esenyurt, Güneşli and Maltepe. The line belongs to the spa location, not to the hotel.
A sample message might read: "Hello, we would like a hammam and a massage for two people on Saturday at 15:00. We would like the hammam first and the massage afterwards. Which area is set aside for women in the hammam?" A message like this lets the location give you a suitable time and layout in a single reply. Giving your name is optional. You do not need to write any health information in WhatsApp; you can tell the massage specialist at the start of the session. If you have a preference about the massage specialist, you can ask the location about it when you book.
When you plan the time, add the lengths of the two services together. If you are combining a hammam and a massage, picking an earlier start leaves room to finish comfortably. Because massage at Mahmutbey starts in the afternoon, before midday you can plan only the wet areas and the pool. Our guide to hammam and massage on the same day: order and timing explains how long each service takes and in which order they can be taken.
We do not publish prices on the website. You get the current price from the location's WhatsApp line, and you can read what affects a price in how massage and hammam prices are set. For the types of massage, see our massage services page.
What should you prepare and ask before your visit?
What makes a visit easier is settling a few questions before you book. If you have any health concern, speak to your doctor before a hammam, sauna or massage.
The general health rule is this: if you have a health condition, are sensitive to heat or are pregnant, speak to your doctor before the hammam, sauna and massage. Harvard Health Publishing likewise advises people with a health condition to check with their doctor before using a sauna. If you do not feel well in a hot area, simply step out and rest. This is not medical advice; it is a preparation rule.
A short list of questions you can ask by phone or WhatsApp:
- Which area is set aside for women (the hammam, the sauna and steam room, or the massage room), and at which hours does that apply?
- Is the hammam open only to guests with a treatment, or can it be booked on its own?
- If I combine a hammam and a massage, which time suits and when is the last appointment?
- If I use the pool, do I need a swimsuit and a cap, and what are the pool hours?
- If I come with my husband, daughter or a friend, how do the shared and separate areas work?
- If I want a couples' massage room or a VIP room, are those rooms inside the area set aside for women?
A peştemal, the thin cotton hammam towel, is provided in the hammam. What to wear in the hammam and at the pool, including swimsuits and caps, differs from location to location; our guide on what to bring to a Turkish bath gives a general checklist. For the steps of the hammam ritual, see the Turkish bath page. "Massage salon" is the name of a regulated workplace category in Türkiye, and the Ministry of Health publishes guidance on the water quality of pools. Neither is something we present as setting us apart, but they are what lies behind the questions you may want to ask any place.
One last note: the hours and arrangements in this article are the information our locations have given us. On public holidays and special days the hours can change, so it is a good idea to confirm with the location's WhatsApp line before you go.
